San Francisco
Bay stretches from San Jose, California to the Carquinez Strait and
is between 3 to 12 miles wide and 48 to 60 miles long depending on how
the San Francisco Bay is defined.
City
of San Francisco
This pre 1960 view of Carquinez Straight
shows the City of San Francisco East bound with Mount Diablo in the
background. No site of construction for the Cargquinez Straight bridges,
placing this historic photo possibly in the mid 1950's. Perhaps on the
return trip, this is the famed stranded City of San Francisco train
that spent days in the ice and snow in Yuba Gap.
Global Rail Tours offers the Valentines
narrative tour between Emeryville and Reno, with an emphasis on history,
and the atmosphere of the City of San Francisco.
Notice the river tide pushing towards
the San Francisco Bay on the bridge. Is this large water mass part of
the San Francisco Bay, or is it part of the San Joaquin Delta? This
lively geological discussion is held as the train crosses the bridge
as part of the fact filled excustion aboard the California Zephr, during
Global Rail Tours City of San Francisco tour.
