Blizzard
on the City of San Francisco 2009

The
Blizzard on the City of San Francisco is a rail tour Valentines
Weekend of 2009. Mid February to the early days of March offers blizzard
conditions between Colfax and Truckee, California. Join former National
Park Service Ranger, and University of Phoenix Geography instructor
as your host for this incredible photo opportunity, from the reaches
of San
Francisco Bay, to the Biggest
Little City in the World. Board in Emeryville,
Martinez,
Davis,
Sacramento,
or Roseville
for the mountain communities of Colfax,
Blue
Canyon, Yuba
Gap, Cisco,
and Truckee.
Gaze out the window as with a private natural interpreter imagine how
the mountains were run, and right around the corner another tunnel and
the unknown.
The
City of San Francisco, the flagship of the Union Pacific and Southern
Pacific railroads in the West, has been dismantled since the 1970's,
and the California Zephyr is but a memory on the Western Pacific Railroad
and Rio Grande railroad in Colorado. Amtrak's California Zephyr runs
on the Southern Pacific/Central Pacific, Rio Grande, Union Pacific,
and Burlington Northern tracks from Emeryville to Chicago.
On March
8, 2007, we were snowed in a blizzard near Truckee, and spent the night
on the East Bound California
Zephyr in a white blizzard. Not in danger, adult passengers passed
the evening sipping white wine, and feasting on fruit baskets and cheese
with crackers.
For the
occasion, we will issue Blizzard on the City of San Francisco blankets,
relax gliding through the snow, ice, and possibly a blizzard. Arriving
in Reno, for a two night stay on Reno's Virginia Square, with meals
provided at participating downtown restaurants.
On Sunday
afternoon, we board the West bound California Zephyr for the scenic
trip over the Sierra Nevada for tales of train robberies, the Donner
Party, building of the railroad, the geology of the region, hydraulic
mining, politics of the old west in Colfax, and onto Auburn, and agriculture
of the Great Central Valley.
Details
on the Blizzard on the City of San Francisco rail tour will be available
in September. Follow your instincts to the rails with Global Rail Tours.
